Comment from Professor Arai:

Harmony & Celebration (2014)

1. About the Research Field

Our research is targeting to create new field of study systematically from the basic to the applied field which is focusing on the field of micro-robotics by mixing the field of robotics and micro/nano technology.
To realize the “mechano-bio-system” which merges the biomedical and mechanical engineering field, our research is targeting to (1) investigate and utilize the unknown functions derived from active cells. (2) imitate the function which livings have and realize by means of engineering.
 (1) In case of approaching to molecule and cells, we are studying the micro-manipulation and the control of the cell division by regeneration medical study. (2)In case of approaching the bio-mimetics, we are studying a micro-robot with exoskeleton modeling the insects. Also, the applied medical study, and the artificial blood vessels study and a research on the transparent model of human is on-going.

2. Principle of our laboratory

My position has been started since 2020 in the University of Tokyo. Our laboratory is focusing on the practical and original researches since then. The fundamental principle is to find subjects and to establish the new field of study and technique, and is targeting to adapt our researches to the society and contribute it. We have following 3 goals for research outputs.
(1) High quality
(2) Innovation
(3) Strong impact
We have a common spirit in our lab, that is, "We can do it!".

3. Education Policy

After you join our laboratory, “do action yourself” is the most important. Please have valuable experiences which cannot obtain through the study to enter the entrance examination and desk work. To do that, it is important to produce something and to do the experiments by moving your own hand and foot and to realize various phenomenon with your all senses. It is also very important to think theoretically and analyze them to explain clearly with full academic background to create systems.
I supervise you to be talented active person who have enough knowledge of his/her specialties and who can investigate his/her research in terms of the supervisor position. Also, I try to create open atmosphere laboratory where all the member can discuss with constructive idea.

4. Principle of my supervision

We hold a research meeting once a week to confirm the progress of each member’s research, and also we have a presentation research meeting once a month to raise the ability of presentation. We confirm the research outline every six months and the plans are corrected if necessary. I supervise you to publish the major journals and to present at the world top level international conferences.
